IMPORTANCE OF CELEBRATING DIVERSITY.
How everyone is made to believe that white is good, a ray of light while black is bad tainted the ugliest darkness is ridiculous. Experiencing and normalization of colorism in Africa is the highest form of mediocrity.
As today we connect the white color with purity and the black with evil. Despite being freed from the Europeans clutches we are still lagging behind by making the light complexion more superior. Most Africans keep denying and critisizing the dark complexion whereas it is our originality. Hate for the dark color has led people to bleaching their skins to achieve a lighter complexion which means “beauty,”
Growing up as a dark skin person in Africa is not a joke as it needs a lot of courage. You will experience critics from your family members, society, education institutions and even at work. Families are the key source for bullying you about your color, doing a small or a silly mistake the first thing that you will be critised with will be your complexion. This lowers many peoples self esteem which can even lead to suicide.
When seeking work opportunities the company will go for the lighter complexion interviewee as their employee because “They will attract more customers due to their color,” as white is defined as beauty and black as ugly.
Mounting up in a society that idolizes the light complexion is dreadfull for the dark skinned child. As people look for anything to critisize and even some will tell you you are not beautiful because you are dark “If you were light in color you would have been beautiful or even my type,” the cryptic words said that breaks your courage which takes time to build or gain it.
